Residual, developed by Pascal Bestebroer, is a new breed of survival platformer from OrangePixel. Set in a forgotten galaxy full of strange planets, the game follows a lone explorer who crash-lands on a planet with an ancient alien secret.
Venturing forth from the shipwreck, players must navigate a harsh and unpredictable procedurally generated world. The primary goal is to stay alive by harvesting food and creating campfires. Additionally, players can craft science-fiction survival tools such as teleporters and mining devices.
What sets Residual apart is its non-violent approach to survival. Rather than engaging in combat, players must overcome obstacles like hunger, cosmic storms, hostile plant life, and the mysterious ooze. Assisting the player throughout their journey is PDB, a snarky floating Personal Disaster Bot, who also helps uncover the hidden lore of the planet.
With OrangePixel's Nature Engine, Residual generates thousands of unique planets based on environment-based rules. Each planet offers different challenges, from intense heat and high winds to long nights and reduced solar power. The pixel art visuals evoke a classic 2D platformer style, and players can choose from a range of protagonist options, including male, female, or non-binary.
